FEATURED FAQS

Can your face masks capture coronavirus (COVID-19) particles?

Unfortunately, there is a lot of misinformation online about face masks and face mask types/specifications (FFP2/3, N95 etc.) as some companies look to profiteer from the current global pandemic. We are committed to honest and transparent business and have tried to simplify the scientific research in this area for our customers.

Our face masks use removable/replaceable PM 2.5 filters. Simply put, these filters can filter out airborne particles down to 2.5 microns wide (1 micron equals 1 micro-metre, which is 0.001mm). Although PM 2.5 filters officially filter particles down to 2.5 microns, in recent studies they have proven they can effectively capture particles down to 0.007 microns (University of Edinburgh study).

Individual coronavirus particles can vary in size, but they are typically 0.1microns in diameter. The vast majority of coronavirus particles in public settings are attached to other particles (such as mucus or other fluids) which are even larger.

The bottom line is that face masks (including ours) can filter particles as small as 0.007 microns – 10 times smaller than viruses, and much, much smaller than PM 2.5 which the filters are certified for.

The filtration element of a face mask is only one factor which is taken into account on this topic. Other factors (such as how well the mask fits the wearer, breathing rate and cleanliness of the mask etc.) contribute to how effective the mask will be in protecting against airborne particles.

Rather than detail all data referring to this topic on our site, we thought it best to provide a link to an expert review by Paddy Robertson of Smart Air. His post details the thoughts from skeptics and the research from scientific studies and attempts to simplify the science surrounding face masks.

Will a face mask protect me from COVID-19?

Although our face masks protect against up to 95% of airborne particles (when using a PM 2.5 filter), a face mask alone will not protect the wearer 100% against the COVID-19 (coronavirus). It is vital that all wearers of MAASK face masks understand that using a face mask alongside other key behaviours leads to a decreased the chance of infection.

Current government guidelines state (April 2020) that it is important to:

- Wash your hands often for at least 20 seconds with soap and water

- Practice social distancing (2 metres apart) when going into public places

-Self-isolate if you or someone in your household have COVID-19 symptoms

Does a face mask have to be made from cotton to be effective?

No.

There is a lot of misinformation online about this topic at present.

Cotton can typically filter particles down to 1 micron in size where as our filtered masks filter down to 0.007 microns.

A recent study at Cambridge University concluded that DIY cotton masks should only be used a last resort against droplet transmission.

What are 'medical grade' face masks?

Medical Grade face masks are masks that are certified, specially designed under European Standards for medical staff to wear whilst they are at work. Medical Grade masks include FFP2, FFP3, N95 and KN95. These types of masks are in short supply globally at present and as such, we believe the general public should be using non-medical grade masks for day-to-day use.

We donate Medical Grade masks so they can be used on the front line in the NHS, care homes and other key areas.

The reusable masks we sell are not required to meet the Medical Grade standards as they are for general/public use and NOT medical use.

Can I wear a face mask in public?

Yes, we advise people to wear our face masks in public settings such as when shopping or traveling on public transport.

What are the small metal strips for?

In each face mask package, you will receive 3 x small aluminium strips which can be used to ensure your MAASK face mask works most efficiently. Simply peel off the sticker on the bottom of the aluminium strip and attach the strip to the fabric piping at the top of your MAASK which rests on the top of your nose. You can then use the aluminium to mould the MAASK to the ridge of your nose to prevent any unwanted gaps.

The face mask can be washed with the aluminium strips attached, however we would advise removing them for intense machine washing cycles. You can simply re-attach the strip once the MAASK is clean and dry, or simply use one of the other strips provided.

We are working with our suppliers to be able to offer these strips in our store if you require more, please email us directly if you have any questions around this subject.

I am worried that MAASK is a scam, is it?

No. MAASK is a UK business based in Brighton, East Sussex and was set up by a group of friends who work in the electric vehicle/automotive sector to tackle the publics need for a sustainable, reusable face mask. If you need more information on our company, please read our Terms of Service or contact us directly.

We are here for the long term and are in no way affiliated with organisations set up to profiteer from the current global coronavirus pandemic.

PRODUCT & TECHNICAL

Are the face masks washable?

Yes! Our face masks can be washed by hand or in the washing machine.

Some of our customers like to buy two masks so one can be worn while the other is washed.

Are the filters washable?

No. If you use our PM 2.5 filters with your face mask, they are a single use item meaning they should be replaced at the end of their usable lifespan (69 hours). If you wish to wash your mask during a filters usable lifespan, you can remove it and then refit it after washing.

To remove the filter safely, it is advised that you:

  1. Wash hands thoroughly before handling your face mask/filters. Feel free to wear protective gloves if the situation requires. Place the mask on a clean surface.
  2. Ensure the inside face of the mask is facing up so that the inner pocket can be accessed.
  3. Pull out the filter and dispose of this safely. We recommend disposing of this immediately.
  4. Wash hands again after disposal of used filter.
  5. Wash and dry face mask.
  6. Take your new unused PM2.5 filter and insert into clean face mask with 'PM2.5' label facing upwards - towards the inner side of the face mask.

It is up to the individual to determine best practice when swapping filters, the above is our 'common-sense' guide.

Do the filters need replacing?

Yes, if you use PM 2.5 filters with your mask, they will need replacing from time to time.

How often should I replace/change the face mask filters?

The effective working life of our filters depends on a number of factors, such as; the breathing rate of the user; ambient levels of pollution; the length of time the filter is actively working; hygiene levels and the environment where the mask is used.

Taking these factors into account, we recommend that the filter should be replaced at least once every month or after 69 hours of use, whichever is sooner.

If the face mask comes into contact with a polluting substance directly, we would advise that the wearer take the precautious route and swap the filter after cleaning/washing the mask.

How do you replace a filter in the face mask?

To remove the filter safely, it is advised that you:

  1. Wash hands thoroughly before handling your face mask/filters. Feel free to wear protective gloves if the situation requires. Place the mask on a clean surface.
  2. Ensure the inside face of the mask is facing up so that the inner pocket can be accessed.

Where are your face masks made?

Are masks are made in Latvia which is in the Eurozone. We are proud to support the European economy! Our production facility manufactures in line with the international World Health Organisation GMP standards (“Good Manufacturing Practices”).

The facility is inspected regularly to ensure we maintain the highest standards both for our team and our products and supply chain procedures.

What are PM 2.5 filters?

PM 2.5 filters are a special type of high-purity polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membrane filter designed to capture micro-particulates which are present in the air. They are similar in grade to an FFP2 mask which can help users protect themselves from airborne irritants and microbial matter.

PM 2.5 filters protect against:

  • Industrial pollution
  • Bacteria
  • Dust
  • Pollen
  • Vehicle emissions

DELIVERY & STOCK

How long will delivery take?

We are working with our delivery partners to get orders to our customers as quickly as possible.

We estimate from ordering, you should expect delivery within 5-10 working days. However, due to the current global coronavirus crisis, we are in the same situation as most online retailers and the fact is that delivery times are variable. In some cases, it can take up to 15 working days for your order to be delivered due to a combination of extreme demand for a particular colour/size and your local courier network capability.

We are adhering to all guidelines and regulations from the World Health Organisation and local public health authorities to provide a safe environment for all of our trusted employees within our distribution centres. Due to the precautions we are taking, there are fewer members of staff processing orders and therefore you may face some delays in receiving your orders.

With that in mind, we would like to offer our thanks for your understanding for any delays in your shipment. Every member of staff here at MAASK are working as quickly and efficiently as possible to get your order out to you safely and swiftly!

I have accidentally ordered the wrong colour face mask, can I change it?

If you have noticed this prior to your order being shipped, then yes - we will manually change the order on our side and update you accordingly. This may slow your delivery down slightly though.

If you have received your order but not opened the packaging, then we will need you to return the items for us to be able to review if we can swap these items. Items that are unopened should normally be swappable.

If you have opened your order and/or worn the mask, then our regular return policy surrounding hygiene comes into effect.

How do I reorder PM 2.5 filters for my mask?

We have created a stand-alone product where you can purchase filters only.

DONATIONS, ENVIRONMENTAL & SOCIAL IMPACT

How do you donate masks to front line workers?

We donate medical grade masks through volume/bulk donations as often as possible. In the current climate, it is hard for us to guarantee dates of when donations are made. We work with charities, partners, the NHS Supply Chain and the Cabinet Office to ensure we get our donations to those who need it most.

We 'front load' donations to make sure each MAASK face mask bought has already made a positive impact for key workers. This means we actively source medical grade PPE in bulk and get it directly to those who need it as quickly as possible. Where we cannot source our own medical grade face masks quickly enough, we will donate the value of two medical grade face masks to an approved PPE charity such as MedSupplyDrive UK (https://www.medsupplydrive.org.uk/) or Masks4NHSHeroes (https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/user/ravindran-visagan/profile)

We DO NOT donate our reusable masks, only single use medical/surgical face masks which are CE marked and approved for use in professional settings. These include FFP1/2/3 and N95/KN95.

Can you donate medical grade masks to my NHS Trust?

Yes we can!

Please get in touch directly as soon as possible and we will fast track your question, please clearly mark your request in the title of your email.

Do you donate PPE to care homes?

Yes, care homes play a critical role in our society and we want to make sure carers and residents get the protection they deserve.

If you work for a care home or have family living in a care home, please get in touch to discuss how we can donate PPE to you today!

Are your face masks environmentally sustainable?

Yes, they are made from 100% recycled ocean plastic waste (except the straps). The fabric is called OceanBalance and more information on our sustainability efforts can be found by clicking here.

They are printed using sublimation which is an eco-friendly printing method that uses significantly less water than tradition fabric colouring techniques

  • OceanBalance recycling process requires 86% less water than manufacturing regular polyester.
  • Making OceanBalance fabrics consumes 70% less energy than regular polyester.
  • The CO2 emissions in creating OceanBalance fabrics are 75% lower.
  • 1 kg of OceanBalance fabric can keep the equivalent of 60 water bottles out of ocean.
  • Using OceanBalance fabrics helps us to not only keep plastic out of the oceans, but also to save our natural resources.
